Ghazel for Birthdays

When we all hear someone say party,

we don’t always first think birthday party.

To celebrate, a beginning, a day for one person

to enjoy their lives and to portray in a party.

A gathering of family and friends play music

and games as grandmother and grandfather sway quietly at the party.

Rooms full of crepe paper streamers in disarray clutter

and confetti all over the floor stays even after the party.

I commemorate another year and pay homage

to myself as I turn forty-three today with a little party
