30/30 Day 18-Street Sign

Prompt: street sign

I am

A street sign

I can tell you to stop

And go with such ease

Tell you where to go

With such precision

Right down to the number of steps

To walk right out of my life

I have been stolen by boys

Pinned up on their walls, a trophy

As if being a thief was a rite of passage

I have been knocked around by a drunk

Left lying as they sped off, leaving only tire marks

And never a name

I have been renamed over and over again

Each rendition a new role, new meaning

A new beginning

I have been painted over, ignored

Crowds passing over me without a second glance

Been re-purposed so many times

I consider myself lost

And not quite sure I will ever be found

You see, I am a street sign

A marker firmly planted in the ground

Navigating through my life

While everyone else tries to tell me where to go
