The Last Day of Spring

On the last day of spring
The sky was overcast
And she tried to ignore
Summer pounding on her back
Him trying to break her open
One more time
So she wore gray
Because he once told her
This color made her appear
To be a shallow grave
He pulled at her flowers
Tearing them apart petal by petal
As if rejection was meant to be painful to her
Him trying to break her open
One more time
So she cried on her last day
Drowning the asphalt
Washed away his shadow, his words
Summer never did listen
Nor enjoyed the moist outcry of her words
So he stepped back as her storms wailed
And when he wasn’t looking
She broke open her smile
Sunshine splintered through the gray
Dancing over the puddles
Until rainbows twisted around fingertips
One more time
She displayed her beauty before summer
Took over her home
