Tent City

A small pot holding a flame
In a lopsided shopping cart
A makeshift path from
Abandoned pallet boards
Rows of tents
Tied down and layered in tarps
Creating a neighborhood
In an open patch of land
Near the freeway on-ramp
People slowly ambling out
In the morning light
Into yards of discarded
Pillows, boxes and bags
And a message in black spray paint
This is the price of capitalism
