Heat

The heat smoldered
Until the city wavered in vapors
Slowly melting into the gutters
With any hope of enjoying the weekend
My clothes melded to my skin
Forming a fine membrane of cotton and sweat
The temperature weighed up my back
And legs swelled as its grip tightened
Crawling home to a haven
Built of box fan walls and air conditioner rooms
Roasted in this late August heatwave
I lay burning on my living room floor
