Searching (National Poetry Month Challenge 12)

Turn on the radio to any channel. Write a poem inspired by the first thing you hear (lyrics to a
song, a commercial, etc.)

I was cold as a stone

But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for
But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for

I believe in the kingdom come
Then all the colors will bleed into one
Bleed into one
Well yes I’m still running

-U2 “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”

The day hung on my shoulders
A cheap jacket of overcast words
I wander along the streets
Rambling in and out of people’s lives
As if they are a strip mall storefronts
And I am binge shopping memories with them
I need to find myself
Resting in someone else’s eyes
Understanding in fractured sentences
So I tug on the trends
Cinching them close to my chest
So I can breathe in a strange dialogue
And speak a new language
People blur in my eyes
And names only labels that I can’t remember
Stumbling along the streets
Looking for a mirror in one person
An understanding we aren’t different
We all speak the same ideas if we would only listen
I listen at the footsteps, feet hitting the pavement
The clipped and haphazard conversations
Shuffling of jackets and sleeves
All punctuation, to stop and start my interest
I stand in the middle of the sidewalk
As people push and shift
I look up at the gray smeared sky
Pull the overcast upon my thoughts
Button up each wish
And layer my words over my hands
Reaching out, hoping for connection
And finding only rain
