Reborn (National Poetry Month Challenge 4)

Make a list of seven words that have the same vowel sounds (like bee, treat, pepperoni, eagle) and use them in a repetitive way throughout a poem.

My words: Ghost, Scold, Toast, Old, Flow, Know, Rose

The night wind kissed our necks
As we gathered around the bonfire
Singing our histories in fire and smoke

Our ghosts scolded as we rose
Toasting our old fears, knowing
Life flowed through resistance

Bent our pain into smiles
We learned to dance
Through broken promised and flawed beginnings

Our ghosts scolded as we rose
Toasting our old fears, knowing
Life flowed through resistance

First step to healing, we spoke our names
Throwing them in the fire
Watched as our shadows burned

Our ghosts scolded as we rose
Toasting our old fears, knowing
Life flowed through resistance

In the morning, we would be reborn
Freedom accompanying us as we walked one by one
Toward home leaving behind a small graveyard for our fears
