Dirty (Repost July 2015)

Sandals snapping with every step
Toes trapped as sweat collects on sides
Dirt build up between toes

It is summer
It is dirty and carefree

Bury feet into piles of sand and pebbles
To collect a bit of coolness
As the sun expands and hovers above
Giggling out conversations
We collect cloud images for stories later
Lips and mouths dyed blue from popsicles
Leaving fingers sticky with revenge

It is summer
It is dirty and carefree

Laying on the grass
Shifting just right so it stains our clothes
We collect misfit blades in our hair
Our noses smudged with dirt
We collect rocks in our pockets as currency
Exchange them like thoughts
Toss them away when no one agrees

We are the heathens of summer
With our feet bound in flip-flops
Dirt collecting upon skin

We don’t care
For it is summer
It is dirty and carefree
