Piper

Be careful
When you barter with the devil
He expects to be paid
With a flute and smile
So wholesome,
Never think he would steal
The children
All in green, he plays
The songs of festivals
They all follow, the children
Marching one by one
Dancing to and fro
The disappear one by one
Over the hill, away from our sight
When you barter with the devil
He expects to be paid
So he plays his flute
Walking down the streets
First he lures the rats away
And we believe we were saved
Instead, he has the children
Demanding ransom
For no good deed is free
There is always a catch
In the form of a flute and a smile
He looks so wholesome
Didn’t expect him to take the children
In the end, we have been played
With empty streets and empty pockets
We watch and wait for the children
To come home
