Carpet and Stars

I wonder if the sky
Is a carpet for the angels
And the stars
Dandruff from their wings
I close my eyes
Imagining how soft the sky would be
As if it was 100% cotton
I wonder if in the early morning hours
When we see the Northern Lights
It is just the angels trying to pull up the sky
And wrap it around themselves
With every flutter and shake of their wings,
More and more stars fall across the sky
Until the angels have to shake it out
Sending the stars falling to the earth
Constellations would be a pleasant accident
And all the years we have studied the stars
For location, perspective and science
Basically chasing shadows, and calling them guides
If the sky is a carpet for the angels
And stars the lint from their pockets
Would that make us mites building an empire
Beneath the angels’ wings
