The city purred as the skyline uncurled, stretching before me

And I can’t help but feeling like I’m another one of her mice she plays with

Batting me left and right along the side roads and roadblocks

Stumbling over the curb and feel the city’s gaze

Calculating and preparing my next step, and I shuffle into the shadows

Hidings, holding myself close, I rush down the street

Ignoring flashing marquees, blinking lights, focusing on a distant siren

Marking another chickadee down, and I say a silent prayer

The city invites you in with a smile, and soon you are rolling down her throat

She cries out in the wind, and I remember she has always been her own

Controlling you under the unyielding glare of the moon

Group of drunken men stumble out in front of me, fleas nipping at her skin

Beady eyes and sharp calls they edge closer to me, and I trace my way back

A quick flash of light and loud wail sends them skittering

I can see her gaze in the officer’s smile and I know she hasn’t forgotten about me

The city purred as the skyline uncurled, stretching before me

She cries out in the wind and I remember she has always been her own

In the moment, I know I belong to her
